Tommy remembers things one piece at a time. The most important pieces stick, the lesser pieces float around and sometimes are forgotten entirely. In a moment of shock or rage-- such as when he first found out about the letter-- all that mattered was that there was a letter.

Now her hesitation says a lot, at least to him. His imagination runs rampant, and he can feel a fresh wave of fury about to break, but he keeps himself in check, though his voice is low with barely restrained anger.
